Actors need to prepare one comedic and one dramatic monologue between 1-2 minutes long each. Actors may be asked to read selected scenes from the script, if needed.

In this adaptation of Hamlet, the title character will be cast as a female role.  There are three female roles, four male roles and eighteen gender fluid roles for this production

Set in the roaring 1920’s Jazz Era New York this show will follow the story of Hamlet, a PRINCESS of the Denmark gang, on a maddening journey of grief and revenge after the death of her father. This show will boast an exciting and lively 1920’s Art Deco design theme focusing on such a unique and tumultuous period of history for society and how these classic characters will navigate it.

Show Dates: Weekends, Sept 20 – Oct 5.

Audience and Parental Warning 

We at Twin Beach Players assume that the actions and plot of this play are well known to all who have decided to audition for this production. However, we do understand that the material presented with in this show, and the way we have chosen to design and portray this material would not be considered appropriate for all ages and/or might not be good material for some actors. It is an adult play with adult themes, language and content. We have billed it as such in our press materials and we have included this warning as an extra precaution.

Below is a list of content that will be portrayed in this adaptation:

  • Romantic scenes with both heterosexual relationships and LGBTQ relationships
  • Murders of all genders and a variety of ages of people
  • Spooky images of ghosts will be present.
  • Loud and unexpected noises will be played through out the show.
  • Flashing lights and visual images will be used through out the production.
  • A suicide will be portrayed both on and off stage as well as many scenes of mental illness and feigned mental illness.
  • Skeletons and graveyard scenes

If you feel for any reason that this production is not one you would like to continue auditioning for, please feel free to decide to release your audition time and exit. Age ranges for each character are based on the characters suggested age in the script, not the actors biological age.

  • The Ghost of Hamlet Sr., (40-60 Male), The dead visage of Hamlet’s father who haunts the play.
  • Hamlet, (20-30 Female), The Princess of Denmark, a smart fast talking thoughtful young woman.
  • Queen Gertrude (40-60 Female), Hamlet’s mother, the Ghosts widow, and the current King’s wife.
  • King Claudius (40-60 Male), Brother to the late King Hamlet, Uncle/Stepfather to Hamlet, new ruler to Denmark and Husband to Gertrude.
  • Ophelia (20-30 Female), Daughter to Polonius, sister to Laertes, and the love interest of Hamlet. (Note above Hamlet is a female in this production.)
  • Laertes (20-30 Gender Fluid), Child of Polonius, brother to Ophelia and friend to Hamlet.
  • Polonius (40-60 Gender Fluid), Chief councilor to the King, a long-winded person, parent to Ophelia and Laertes.
  • Reynaldo (20-30 Gender Fluid), Young attendant to Polonius. (A good role for a high school/college aged actor.)
  • Horatio (20-50 Male), Hamlet’s close friend and confidant.
